Etymology: Old English wærc (masculine) = Old Norse verk-r (Swedish värk pain, Danish værk gout, rheumatism) < Old Germanic *warki-z , from the same root as *werko-m work n.With the dialect variation between the types wark and warch compare the similar variation in Middle English between like and liche (like adj.). The form wark may be partly due to Old Norse verkr.
