Etymology: < Buddha n. + -ism suffix, after Buddhist n. Compare French Bouddhisme (1799 as Buddisme in the passage translated in quot. 1800).
A religious and philosophical system based on the teachings of Siddhārtha Gautama (see Buddha n. 1), which is underpinned by the four Noble Truths (see Noble Truth n.) and maintains that human suffering can be eradicated by achieving enlightenment.There are two major traditions of Buddhism, Theravada and Mahayana, and many forms within these traditions.
