Etymology: < German Acolyctin (F. Hübschmann 1865, in Neues Repertorium f. die Pharm. 14 464) < aco- (in classical Latin aconītum aconite n.) + lyc- and -t- (in post-classical Latin lycoctonum : see lycoctonine n.) + -in -ine suffix⁵, after scientific Latin Aconitum lycoctonum , name of the plant from which the base is obtained (6th cent. in post-classical Latin in Dioscorides as Aconitum lycoctonon ). Compare French acolyctine (1865 in Littré). Compare lycoctonine n. and later aconine n. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ækoli·ktəin) /ækəʊˈlɪktaɪn/.

Chemistry. Now historical and rare.

An alkaloid obtained from wolfsbane, Aconitum lycoctonum, and believed to be identical with aconine (napelline).
