单词 wai wai
释义

Wai Wain.adj.

Brit. /ˈwʌɪ wʌɪ/, U.S. /ˈwaɪ ˌwaɪ/, Caribbean English /ˈwai ˌwai/, /ˈweː ˌweː/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, Wai Wais.
Forms: 1800s Woyawai, 1800s Woyowai, 1900s Wyowai, 1900s– Wai Wai, 1900s– Wai-Wai, 1900s– Waiwai.
Origin: Apparently of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Apparently reflecting an ethnonym of uncertain origin (see note); perhaps related to Wai Wai wewe wood (cognate with similar words in other Cariban languages), and now often associated (apparently by folk etymology) with the unrelated Wapishana word wai tapioca. The name was apparently uncommon except in European use until the mid 20th cent. It is unclear whether it was a originally a self-designation, but a Dutch report of 1721 mentions a village in the region, whose inhabitants called themselves Weij Weij.
