Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Acol.
Etymology: Either < the name of the Acol Club, in which the system was devised in the 1930s, or < the name of Acol Road, Hampstead, London, the address of the club.
Bridge.
A system of bidding designed to enable partners with weaker hands to find suitable contracts. Frequently (and in earliest use) attributive, as Acol player, Acol system, etc.
