Origin: A borrowing from German, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a Greek lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: German Acoelom , English -at- , -ous suffix; German acoelom , English -at- , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < either German Acoelom, noun ( E. Haeckel Natürliche Schöpfungsgeschichte (1873) 463) or the corresponding adjective acoelom (1874 in the passage translated in quot. 1874; both < a- a- prefix6 + Coelom cœlome n.) + -ous suffix, with insertion of -at- after either ancient Greek κοίλωματ-, stem of κοίλωμα a hollow, cavity (see cœlome n.) or German Coelomat cœlomate n. Compare slightly later cœlomatous adj.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare.
Lacking a body cavity; = acoelomate adj.
