Etymology: < scientific Latin Acoela (W. N. Uljanin 1870) < ancient Greek ἄκοιλος not hollow < ἀ- a- prefix⁶ + κοῖλος hollow (see cœlo- comb. form¹); compare ancient Greek ἀκοίλιος without ducts, without stomach. Compare earlier acoelous adj.
