Etymology: < West Germanic burg (whence late Latin burgus), an earlier form of the word which has become borough in English. N.E.D. (1888) gives the pronunciation as (burg, būəɹg, also bɒ̄ɹg) /bʊrɡ/, /bʊəɡ/, also /bɜːɡ/.
1. Occasionally applied by historians to a fortress (borough n. 1) or a walled town (borough n. 2) of early and medieval times, so as to exclude the later notions connected with burgh, borough. See borough n. 3. burg-ward n. (see quot.)

1753 Chambers's Cycl. Suppl. Burgward..in middle age writers, the same with bulwark. The name is also extended to the town, and even the country about such a fortress.
