Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Volkssturm.
Etymology: < German Volkssturm (1944 denoting the German armed force comprising all males from the ages of 16 to 60 who were not already in military service; 1919 as the title of a Viennese nationalist periodical; already in Middle High German as volcsturm in the sense ‘armed conflict in which whole nations take part’) < Volks- , combining form of Volk people (see folk n.) + Sturm storm n., after Landsturm armed force during the German Wars of Liberation against Napoleon I (early 19th cent.).

A German armed force formed during the last months of the Second World War (1939–45) through the conscription of all males from the ages of 16 to 60 not already in military service.The force was active from the autumn of 1944 to the spring of 1945 and mainly consisted of older men and teenage boys. It is associated principally with the defence of Berlin against Soviet invasion.
