Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Volksmarsch.
Etymology: < German Volksmarsch (1968 or earlier) < Volks- , combining form of Volk people (see folk n.) + Marsch action of marching (first half of the 17th cent.; < French marche : see march n.5). The β. forms show remodelling of the second element after march n.5
Chiefly U.S.
A walk undertaken as a fitness or leisure activity, esp. over a set distance as part of an organized event. Also: an organized event of this type. Frequently as a modifier, as in Volksmarch club, Volksmarch trail, Volksmarch walk, etc.A path or trail used for a Volksmarch event is typically either 5 km (3.1 miles) or 10 km (6.2 miles) long.
