Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: volcano n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < volcan- (in volcano n.) + -ist suffix, originally after French volcaniste (1776 or earlier in sense 1). Compare vulcanist n., volcanism n.
Geology.
1. Also with capital initial. A person who attributes the origin of basalt and other crystalline rocks to volcanic action or to igneous processes in general (now historical); contrasted with Neptunist n. 2. Also in extended use: a person who attributes certain features or phenomena (as craters or mass extinctions) to volcanoes. Cf. Plutonist n., vulcanist n. 3.
