Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly either (i) a borrowing from French. Or perhaps (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: Italian virtuosa ; French virtuose ; virtuoso n.
Etymology: Originally (in quot. 1662) < Italian virtuosa female virtuoso (see virtuosa n.). In later use either < French virtuose virtuoso (1649; 1761 denoting a highly accomplished musician; < Italian virtuoso virtuoso n.), or perhaps an alteration (with suffix substitution: compare -ose suffix1) of virtuoso n. Compare later virtuose adj.
Now rare.
A virtuoso (in various senses); esp. a highly accomplished musician.In quot. 1662 specifically denoting a woman (see etymology).
