Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian virtuosa.
Etymology: Apparently < Italian virtuosa (1662 (in the passage translated in quot. 1662 at virtuose n.) or earlier in sense ‘female virtuoso’), feminine form corresponding to virtuoso virtuoso n. The sense ‘morally virtuous or highly esteemed woman’ is not recorded in dictionaries of Italian; however, compare virtuoso virtuous adj., which is attested from the 14th cent. in the senses ‘morally virtuous’ and ‘(of a woman) chaste’.In plural form virtuose after the Italian plural form.
