Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin acne.
Etymology: Apparently < post-classical Latin acne (1713), perhaps < Byzantine Greek ἀκνή , transmission error for Hellenistic Greek ἀκμή eruption on the face, pimple, specific use of ancient Greek ἀκμή point (see acme n.).The Hellenistic Greek medical writer Cassius (3rd cent. a.d.) asks ( Problemata 33), why pimples occur on the face at the critical time (ἀκμή, perhaps denoting adolescence), ‘from which some ignorant people call them acmes (ἀκμάς)?’ The Byzantine Greek medical writer Aëtius (6th cent. a.d.) uses ἀκμάς in one passage (7. 110) and ἀκνάς in a later passage (8. 14), in both cases denoting pimples.
Medicine.
Any of a group of disorders of the skin characterized by the presence of comedones (blackheads), papules, and pustules, sometimes progressing to abscesses and cysts, occurring on the face and other areas in which sebaceous glands are numerous; spec. = acne vulgaris n.Frequently with distinguishing scientific Latin or English word, typically indicating the type of skin lesions present or the appearance or cause of the acne. Cf. also acne rosacea n. (which is no longer considered to be a true form of acne).
