Origin: A borrowing from Swedish; partly modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymon: Swedish Achmit.

Etymology: Originally < Swedish Achmit (Berzelius 1821 in Kongliga Vetenskaps Academiens Handlingar 166, in a supplement to an article by P. Ström who discovered the mineral) < Greek ἀχμή , supposed variant of ancient Greek ἀκμή point (see acme n.) + -it -ite suffix¹, so called on account of the shape of its crystals. In later use altered after ancient Greek ἀκμή.Berzelius derived Swedish Achmit from a Greek form ἀχμή, but this is apparently not attested in Greek authors.

Mineralogy.

An iron-containing mineral of the pyroxene group, which occurs as dark green, pointed crystals.Acmite is a silicate of sodium and iron, NaFeSi₂O₆. Crystal system: monoclinic.
