单词 buckshee
释义

bucksheen.adj.adv.

Brit. /ˌbʌkˈʃiː/, /ˈbʌkʃiː/, U.S. /ˈbəkˌʃi/, /ˌbəkˈʃi/
Forms: 1700s buxie, 1800s– buckshee, 1900s backshee, 1900s buckshe.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by back-formation. Etymons: English buckshees , baksheesh n.
Etymology: Apparently a back-formation < buckshees, variant of baksheesh n., by reanalysis of such forms as showing a count noun with the English plural ending -s.With the forms buxie and backshee compare (respectively) buxis and backshees at baksheesh n., adj., and adv. Forms. Compare also the following, which can be read as an example of the mass noun baksheesh n., although the gloss ‘gifts’ also allows an interpretation as a count noun in the plural:1824 Baptist Mag. June 268 I offered them bukshees (gifts) if they would go into the house with me.
A. n. Now rare.
