Etymology: < Old French (also modern French) vilipender, or < Latin vīlipendĕre, < vīlis vile, worthless + pendĕre to consider, esteem. Compare Italian vilipendere, Spanish vilipendiar, Portuguese vilipendiar.
1. transitive. To rate or regard as being of little value or consequence; to contemn or despise; to treat contemptuously or slightingly.Very common c1500–1660, in some cases not clearly distinguishable from sense 2.
