A device, system, or (in later use) piece of software that creates an approximation of an audio signal by using the amplitudes of a number of its frequency bands to control filters applied to a carrier signal.Vocoders were originally developed as a means of recreating recognizable human speech over telecommunications systems in a way that required less bandwidth than transmitting the signal directly. Such devices and software are now frequently used in music, where they are applied to various types of audio signals to create a distinctive effect.
