Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. voco-phonetic Brit. /ˌvəʊkə(ʊ)fəˈnɛtɪk/, U.S. /ˌvoʊkoʊfəˈnɛdɪk/.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: vocal adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < voc- (in vocal adj.) + -o- connective.Found in a small number of formations from the early 20th cent. onwards, exemplified below. Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin and Greek origin.
Forming adjectives with the sense ‘both vocal and ——’, as voco-auditory, voco-phonetic, voco-visual, etc. Cf. vocal adj. and n. Compounds 1.
