Etymology: Mahn says ‘ < bull n.1 large, and tow n.2 ’; but the word looks like an alteration of bulter n., under the influence of ‘popular etymology’. (Dutch bulletouw, ‘a name applied to several ropes about a ship’, has also been suggested.)
