Origin: A borrowing from Haitian Creole. Etymon: Haitian Creole vèvè.
Etymology: < Haitian Creole vèvè < Portuguese viver to live, be alive (13th cent.; < classical Latin vīvere to live: see vivat int. and n.).
In voodoo and some other Afro-Caribbean religions: any of various symbols used to represent or summon a particular god or spirit.In ritual use a veve is traditionally made on the ground using lines of cornmeal, ash, or another powdery substance.
