Etymology: < Anglo-Norman vetoine, vetonie (13th cent. or earlier; compare Old French vetoine , vetoigne , Middle French, French †vettoine (13th cent.)) < classical Latin vettonica (of uncertain prosody: see note; in post-classical Latin also vetonica (4th cent.)), use as noun (short for herba vettonica ) of feminine of vettonicus , adjective, probably ultimately of Celtic origin; derived by Pliny < the name of the Vettōnēs , a confederacy of (probably) Celtic peoples in the southern central region of the Iberian peninsula + -icus -ic suffix. Compare earlier betony n.Classical Latin vettonica is attested only in prose authors, so the vowel length is not evident. The 4th-cent. medical writer Serenus, who writes in verse, implies a form vēttŏnica.
