The action or practice of behaving like a bully; the use of violence, intimidation, or threats; (now usually) the action or practice of seeking to harm, coerce, or intimidate someone perceived as vulnerable, esp. on a persistent or regular basis.Originally with reference to the behaviour of the bullies and hectors of the late 17th and early 18th centuries (see bully n.1 II., Hector n. 2). From the 19th cent. often used with reference to the behaviour of schoolchildren towards one another and later, by extension, the behaviour of adults in other institutions, in the workplace, etc. In the early 21st cent. increasingly also with reference to psychological or emotional harm caused by threatening, coercive, or hurtful social media activity (cf. cyber-bullying n.).
