A violent, aggressive person; a thug; (in early use) spec. a highwayman who is violent or abusive towards his victims, i.e. contrary to the image of the highwayman as a gentleman thief (see gentleman n. 8b, Phrases 6a).In quot. 1653 apparently allusively as a nickname for the penis.
