单词 view halloo
释义

view halloon.

Brit. /ˌvjuː həˈluː/, U.S. /ˌvju həˈlu/
Forms:

α. 1700s–1800s view hollow, 1700s–1900s view hollo, 1700s– view holloa.

β. 1700s– view halloo, 1700s– view holloo.

γ. 1700s–1800s view holla.

δ. 1800s view hilloh.

ε. 1800s view hallo, 1800s view hullow, 1800s– view halloa.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: view n., hollo int.
Etymology: Originally < view n. + hollo int. Subsequently with remodelling of the second element after halloo int., holla int., hallo int., hillo int., and hullo int., which probably all show variants of the same (ultimately imitative) hunting cry.In early use the main stress apparently fell on the first syllable of the second element; compare rhyming and metrical evidence in quots. 1796 at sense 1α. , 1792 at sense 1β. (although it is doubtful that either source should be given very much weight in this regard).
1. A cry given by a hunter on seeing a hunted animal (esp. a fox) break cover or (occasionally) on securing a hunted animal.
