Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Vincent.
Etymology: < the name of Jean Hyacinthe Vincent (1862–1950), French medical scientist, who described the condition in 1898 ( Arch. internat. de laryngol., otol., & rhinol. 11 44).With Vincent's angina compare French angine de Vincent (1900 or earlier).
Medicine.
In the genitive and attributive, esp. in Vincent's angina, Vincent's disease, Vincent's gingivitis. Designating an acute, ulcerative infection of the throat, mouth, or gums, caused by a mixture of mainly anaerobic bacteria including Fusobacterium nucleatum and spirochaetes.
