Etymology: < bus n.¹ + girl n., after busboy n.In contexts referring to Japan and Korea (in sense 2) apparently partly after Japanese basugāru (1930; probably < the English compound, or perhaps formed independently < basu bus ( < English bus n.¹) + gāru girl, young woman (a1886; < English girl n.)), and partly after the similarly-formed Korean bŏsŭgŏl, ppŏsŭkkŏl (both first half of the 20th cent. (and now disused); after Japanese).
