Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bus n.1, girl n.
Etymology: < bus n.1 + girl n., after busboy n.In contexts referring to Japan and Korea (in sense 2) apparently partly after Japanese basugāru (1930; probably < the English compound, or perhaps formed independently < basu bus ( < English bus n.1) + gāru girl, young woman (a1886; < English girl n.)), and partly after the similarly-formed Korean bŏsŭgŏl, ppŏsŭkkŏl (both first half of the 20th cent. (and now disused); after Japanese).
1. Originally and chiefly U.S. A girl or young woman employed to clear tables in a restaurant, etc. Cf. busboy n. 2.
