Etymology: < either classical Latin vegetāre vegetate v. or classical Latin vegetus vegete adj. + -ary suffix1. Compare vegetous adj., vegete adj., and also earlier vegetative adj., vegetal adj.
Originally: characterized by life and growth; vegetative, vegetable. In later use: consisting of or characterized by vegetables or vegetation.
