单词 vegetarian
释义

vegetariann.adj.

Brit. /ˌvɛdʒᵻˈtɛːrɪən/, U.S. /ˌvɛdʒəˈtɛriən/
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: vegetable n., -arian suffix.
Etymology: Irregularly < veget- (in vegetable n.) + -arian suffix. Compare German Vegetarianer, noun (1853), Vegetarier, noun (1852), French végétarien (1875 as noun, 1878 or earlier as adjective). The general use of the word appears to have been largely due to the formation of the Vegetarian Society at Ramsgate in 1847. With sense A. 2 compare the Chinese names of the sect, zhāijiāo ( < zhāi vegetarian diet adopted for religious reasons + jiāo religious school) and càihuì ( < cài vegetable + huì group, association).
