Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: vegetal adj., -ity suffix; vegetability n.
Etymology: Either < vegetal adj. + -ity suffix, or shortened < vegetability n. Compare French végétalité state or nature of a plant (1842), (in a living organism) the most basic functions, common to plants and animals (1852), plants collectively (1872).
