单词 valance
释义

valancen.1

Brit. /ˈvaləns/, /ˈvaln̩s/, U.S. /ˈvæləns/
Forms: α. Middle English valaunce, 1500s–1600s valans (1500s wal-), Middle English– valance (1700s volance); Middle English–1800s vallance. β. Middle English, 1600s–1700s valens, 1500s valense, 1600s–1800s vallens (1600s -ins), 1500s– valence, 1500s–1600s vallence. γ. plural 1500s vallanes, 1500s, 1700s vallance, 1600s, 1800s vallens; 1500s, 1800s valence, 1600s valens. δ. plural 1500s valandes, 1600s vallands, vallents, 1800s valends.
Etymology: Of obscure origin: perhaps < Anglo-Norman *valance , < valer = Old French avaler to descend (compare vale vail v.2). Florio (1598) gives ‘Valenza, valenzana, Say or Serge for bed-curtins or valances for beds’, and ‘Valenzana del letto, valences for beds’, but there is no evidence for the genuineness of these.
