Etymology: < scientific Latin Acineta, genus name (C. G. Ehrenberg 1833 or 1834) < ancient Greek ἀκίνητος motionless (see akinetic adj.; probably alluding to the fact that the tentacles are not in constant motion like the cilia or flagella of other protozoans) + -an suffix. Compare earlier acinetiform adj.
