Etymology: < older Dutch veldt, now veld /vɛlt/: see field n.1 The spelling veld is now the usual form in South Africa and in other varieties of English.
In South Africa, the unenclosed country or open pasture-land. Frequently with defining terms denoting character or locality, as bushveld n., grassveld n. at grass n.1 Compounds 5, highveld n., lowveld n., sour veld n. at sour adj. and n.1 Compounds 2, sweet-veld n. Hence occasionally in plural (quot. 1876 at α. ).
