Etymology: < vaccine n. + -oid suffix, after German Vaccinoid (1831 or earlier).Compare French vaccinoïde, adjective (1839 or earlier) and noun (1826 or earlier).

A. adj.
Originally: designating the disease produced by revaccination against smallpox, and the skin lesions characteristic of this. In later use: spec. designating a type of reaction to inoculation of vaccinia virus that is seen in persons with partial immunity to the virus, and is characterized by milder symptoms and a more rapid course than the reaction occurring in a person with no immunity.
