单词 vaccinium
释义

vacciniumn.

Brit. /vakˈsɪnɪəm/, U.S. /vækˈsɪniəm/
Inflections: Plural vaccinia, (in later use) vacciniums.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin vaccīnium.
Etymology: < classical Latin vaccīnium whortleberry or bilberry, in post-classical Latin also a plant with purple flowers, perhaps the violet (5th cent. in grammarians and commentators on Virgil's Eclogues (see note); frequently from 12th cent. in British sources), a loan from a non-Indo-European language, which was also borrowed as ancient Greek ὑάκινθος hyacinth n.The interpretation of classical Latin vaccīnium in Virgil's Eclogues (2. 18; 10. 39) is disputed. Some scholars, following the ancient commentators, interpret these examples as denoting a plant with purple flowers, perhaps the violet. Others (e.g. J. André Les noms des plantes dans la Rome antique (2010) 268) consider these examples to be uses of the word in the sense ‘bilberry’. Compare French vaccinium (1628 or earlier), Italian vaccinio, vacinio (1598 in Florio). Compare the following earlier example of Latin vaccīnium in an English context:1542 T. Elyot Bibliotheca Hyacinthus, called also Vaccinium, hath leaues lyke porret,..the toppe lyinge downe full of purple floures.
