Etymology: In earlier use < older Spanish vaynilla , now vainilla , diminutive of vaina ( < Latin vāgīna vagina n.) sheath. Subsequently < modern botanical Latin Vanilla , from the same source. Compare Italian vainiglia , Portuguese bainilha , baunilha , French vanille vanille n.
1. A pod produced by one or other species of the genus Vanilla (see sense 2), esp. V. planifolia. Chiefly in plural.
