Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French veillée.
Etymology: < French veillée social evening gathering (1292 in Old French as veilliee ) < veiller to stay awake (c1120 in Old French as veillier ), to keep watch (1210; < classical Latin vigilāre : see vigilant adj.) + -ée , suffix forming nouns (see -ate suffix1).
In French-speaking areas: a traditional evening social gathering of a family or community, often with singing, dancing, etc.Earliest attested with reference to rural areas of France; the word is later also found in Canada and Louisiana.
