Etymology: In early use < unwield n. + -ly suffix1; later a variant of unwieldy adj.Many quots. for unwieldly in reprints from 1681 onwards have, on verification in first editions or the manuscripts, proved to be misprints of unwieldy adj., as in quots. 1681 1730. The prevalence of the misprint may be the chief source of the form.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: unˈwieldly.
