Etymology: un- prefix1 1b.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: unˈwedgeable.
Incapable of being split by wedges; uncleavable. In modern use only in echoes of the Shakespeare passage, with a tendency towards the wider meaning ‘very hard, stubborn, or difficult to deal with’: frequently used by Carlyle.
