Etymology: < urbanize v. + -ation suffix. Compare French urbanisation process of making or becoming urban in character (1924; 1919 in sense ‘urban planning’), and also Spanish urbanización process of making or becoming urban in character (late 20th cent. or earlier; 1867 in sense ‘town planning’ ( I. Cerdá La teoría general de la urbanización)).
