Etymology: < acid n. + -osis suffix, after German Acidose (1899 or earlier; now Azidose ). Compare earlier acidaemia n.
Medicine.
Increased acidity (total acid content) of the blood or other body fluid, resulting from acquired or inherited metabolic disorders causing production of excess acid or loss of alkali, or from retention of carbon dioxide in respiratory disorders; an instance of this. Frequently with distinguishing word, usually indicating the type or cause of the acidosis. Cf. acidaemia n., alkalosis n.metabolic acidosis: see metabolic adj. Compounds.
