Origin: Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from Khoekhoe. Partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: Dutch boegoe, German Buchu.
Etymology: < Dutch boegoe (1691 as bouchu ; Afrikaans boegoe ) and its apparently unattested Khoekhoe etymon (see note). In quot. 1731 via German Buchu (1719 in the passage translated). The identity of the underlying Khoekhoe word is unclear, it may be a compound with the second element xuu thing (with x representing the voiceless velar fricative /x/); Khoekhoe and related languages now use a different word (compare, in the Cape region, !Ora (Korana) sâ-i ). Variant forms. The form boughou is found in a translation of a French text. Forms with oe (for /u/) or g (for /x/) reflect the spelling conventions of Dutch and Afrikaans. The β. forms (with medial /k/) occur earliest in translations from Swedish (which, like English, does not have /x/).
Any of several aromatic plants native to the Cape of Good Hope, used in the past for cosmetic purposes by the Khoekhoe, and now medicinally.Formerly termed Diosma crenata; now assigned in Pharmacopœias to various species of Barosma.
