Etymology: < upcycle v. + -ing suffix1, after recycling n. Compare German Upcycling action of reusing waste material so as to create a product of higher quality or value than the original (1987 or earlier; apparently < English up- up- prefix + -cycling (in German Recycling recycling n.)).
The operation or process of reusing waste materials to create a product of higher value or quality; (more generally) the action or process of repurposing or renovating an old or unwanted item to make it more attractive, valuable, etc. Cf. upcycle v.
