单词 | -latry |
释义 | -latrycomb. form Chiefly in the form -olatry, forming abstract nouns with the sense ‘excessive worship or admiration of a thing or a person’, corresponding with agent nouns in -later comb. form and -latrist comb. form, and with adjectives in -latrous comb. form. Many examples are formed on possible roots of Greek origin, as angelolatry, astrolatry, bibliolatry, cosmolatry, demonolatry, grammatolatry, martyrolatry, etc. Hence, in humorous nonce-use, hybrids have been formed such as babyolatry, crochetolatry, dutiolatry, Japanolatry, and lordolatry, see -olatry comb. form. Formations in -latry are by far the most frequent of this related group of terminal combining forms, and generally (though not exclusively) enter English earlier than formations on the same root in -later, -latrist, and -latrous. This entry has not yet been fully updated (first published 1902; most recently modified version published online December 2018). < comb. form |
