单词 burning bush
释义

burning bushn.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: burning adj., bush n.1
Etymology: < burning adj. + bush n.1In sense a with allusion to the story of Moses observing a bush burning without being destroyed by the fire (Exodus 3). The specific uses denoting plants (sense b) each show a different semantic motivation: the artillery plant is probably so called because its male plants expel their pollen forcefully; with the semantic motivation in the case of dittany, compare quot. 1878, and compare also gas plant n. 2; and species of Euonymus are so called on account of their bright red autumn foliage.
