Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu urdū, Persian urdū.
Etymology: < (i) Urdu urdū (short for urdū-zabān , lit. ‘language of the camp’), specific use of urdū camp, originally the camp of the ruler (also used specifically to denote Delhi), and its etymon (ii) Persian urdū camp ( < Chaghatai ordu camp of the ruler: see horde n. and compare ordu n.), subsequently also used to denote the Urdu language.
