Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French bubbation; Latin bubbation-, bubbatio.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French bubbation (1584 in Du Pinet's translation of Pliny; compare quot. 1601), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin bubbation-, bubbatio, former reading (e.g. in 16th-cent. editions) at Pliny Nat. Hist. 34. 148, as bubbatione (ablative), where modern editions read classical Latin bulbatione or bullatione (see bullation n.).
Obsolete. rare.
Perhaps: occurrence of a mineral in rounded or blister-shaped masses. Cf. bullation n.
