Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Brython n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: < Brython n. + -ic suffix. Compare Welsh Brythoneg , noun (15th cent.; originally in sense ‘Welsh language’). Compare later Brittonic n.Introduced as a linguistic term by John Rhŷs (see Brython n. and compare quot. 1884 at sense A.) to avoid the ambiguities inherent in pre-existing words such as British adj. and Cymric adj. Usually contrasted with Goidelic n. and Goidelic adj.
