Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Bryozoa.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Bryozoa (C. G. Ehrenberg, 1831) < ancient Greek βρύον moss (see bryon n.) + scientific Latin -zoa -zoa comb. form, so called on account of the appearance of some species.
Zoology.
With plural (or occasionally singular) agreement: a phylum of sedentary aquatic invertebrates comprising the moss animals, which form encrusting or frondlike colonies composed of minute individual zooids that filter-feed by means of a crown of ciliated tentacles (lophophore). Also with plural agreement (also in form bryozoa): animals of this phylum (collectively or individually); moss animals. Also called Ectoprocta, Polyzoa.Formerly regarded as coelenterates or molluscs, and at one time including the entoprocts, the Bryozoa are now known to be one of the lophophorate phyla.bryozoon n. is sometimes used as the singular form; cf. bryozoan n.
