Etymology: < Latin bryonia (Pliny), < Greek βρυωνία (Dioscorides). Compare also French bryone, whence English brione in 16th cent.
1. The English name of the plant-genus Bryonia (family Cucurbitaceæ); and spec. the common wild species ( Bryonia dioica), sometimes called (in distinction from sense 2) red, or white Bryony.
